Yaron Brook analyzes the resolution for policy debates at national finals of the National Forensic League (a debating society for students). The resolution is: “Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its military and/or police presence in one or more of the following: South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Turkey.”
The size and scope of government has become one of the most contested issues in American politics. What is government’s proper role? Should it focus on protecting individual rights and free markets? Or on promoting equality and solving society’s problems?
This debate between Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute and Miles Rapoport of Demos is the first event in a three-part series titled “First Principles: The Moral Debates That Drive Today’s Politics.” It was recorded March 10, 2011, in New York.
