The Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights

The size and scope of government has become one of the most contested issues in American politics. What is government’s proper role? Should it focus on protecting individual rights and free markets? Or on promoting equality and solving society’s problems?

This debate between Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute and Miles Rapoport of Demos is the first event in a three-part series titled “First Principles: The Moral Debates That Drive Today’s Politics.” It was recorded March 10, 2011, in New York. Also appearing is Miles Rapoport, president of New York-based Demos and Dr. Brook’s opponent in the debate. This program was recorded on March 10, 2011. In Citizens United, the Supreme Court held that corporations can spend unlimited amounts of money on speech during elections. Critics view Citizens United as a striking example of judicial activism that will unleash a flood of corporate money in elections. Defenders view it as a ringing endorsement of First Amendment rights. All agree that it will have a significant impact on campaign finance laws. In this video, recorded March 16, 2010, a panel of experts including Steve Simpson, Eric Daniels, Tara Malloy and Doug Kendall hold a vigorous discussion and debate about this important ruling.
